MULTISTAGE PUMP SYSTEMS

Multistage Pump

What is a Multistage Pump?

A multistage pump passes liquid through successive impellers so that the stages contribute to the total delivery head. HENVO lists vertical, horizontal and inline configurations, including CDL, CDLF, D, DF, DG, DL, GC, GDL and MD series. Buyers commonly start with required flow and total head, then review inlet conditions, liquid temperature and installation layout. The DG and GC listings identify boiler-water or boiler-feed duties, while other water-pump listings require their own operating-point and material checks.

Applications

Water supply and pressure boosting

CDL, CDLF, DL and GDL water or inline listings provide options to review where the system needs additional head. Match the selected model to the required flow and inlet conditions.

Boiler-feed enquiries

DG Multistage Boiler Water Pump and GC Multistage Boiler Feed Pump identify this application. Specify feedwater temperature, inlet pressure and the required delivery duty.

Horizontal water-transfer installations

D-series horizontal water-pump listings offer a different installation arrangement from vertical units. Provide the system head, pipe connections and maintenance-space requirements.

How to Select the Right Pump?

Selection depends on the following operating conditions. Keep the units and pressure reference explicit when sending your requirement.

  1. Establish the operating point

Give flow and total required head at the same condition. State whether a supplied pressure is gauge or absolute and provide liquid density when pressure and head are being compared.

  2. Review the stage configuration

Choose stages against the required duty and the model curve. Additional stages principally increase head; they do not simply multiply the flow.

  3. Check inlet conditions

Provide inlet pressure, tank level, liquid temperature and suction-line losses. These determine the available suction conditions for the proposed model.

  4. Confirm liquid and materials

Identify the water or process liquid, temperature range and contaminants. A stainless-steel listing does not remove the need for a compatibility review.

  5. Select layout and drive

Compare vertical, horizontal and inline installation needs. Include motor supply, speed, mounting and access for maintenance.

  6. Compare single-stage alternatives

Review Centrifugal Pump options when a single-stage arrangement can meet the duty. If the inlet installation requires priming assistance, discuss that separately instead of assuming a multistage design supplies it.

Technical Considerations

Flow and total-head calculation

Prepare the required flow, elevation changes, inlet and outlet pressures, pipe lengths and fittings. Include any operating points beyond the normal duty.

Liquid and suction information

Send temperature, density, water quality or liquid composition and the source-tank arrangement. Boiler-feed enquiries should identify feedwater conditions explicitly.

Installation constraints

Provide available footprint, connection orientation, electrical supply and control requirements. Reference the exact series and request a model curve for the proposed configuration.

Procurement Questions

What distinguishes a multistage pump from a single-stage pump?

Liquid passes through several impellers in a multistage pump, allowing successive stages to contribute head. The useful comparison is the required flow and total head, not the stage count alone.

Will more stages increase my required flow?

Adding stages primarily increases head for a given hydraulic design and speed. Select the flow range and stage configuration together using the proposed model’s curve.

Which listed products should I discuss for boiler feed?

DG Multistage Boiler Water Pump and GC Multistage Boiler Feed Pump are explicitly named for those duties. Provide feedwater temperature, inlet conditions, flow and delivery pressure for a model-specific review.

How do I choose a vertical or horizontal arrangement?

Compare the duty point with the available footprint, pipe orientation, mounting and service access. Confirm the motor and selected construction rather than choosing by appearance alone.

When may another centrifugal pump be sufficient?

A single-stage centrifugal model may be suitable when it meets the required flow and head within its operating range. Compare that option before specifying extra stages solely on the basis of a higher published maximum.
